Our history

How it all started…

In 2017, the seed of the success story of Optimum Sorting was planted in Hasselt (Belgium). Both founders, Paul Berghmans and Steve Raskin, already had a lot of experience in the world of optical sorting technology at that time. With the acquisition of the Dutch Concept Engineers (Eindhoven), they launched a new player on the market that wanted to set a progressive standard in the field of camera sorting, laser detection, and customer service. Optimum Sorting was born and ready for the future!

In 2025, Optimum Sorting achieved a turnover of € 40 million and there were 120 people employed, spread across the various branches in Europe, America, and Asia.

New machines, new possibilities

The engineers of the new Optimum Sorting quickly prove that sitting still is not for them. In 2018, they launch the Ventus: the first laser sorter, equipped with no fewer than 16 lasers. Two years later, the Novus follows, which to this day remains the widest belt sorter on the market, suitable for a very wide range of applications.

From the beginning, the emphasis was on inspecting and sorting food products such as potatoes and vegetables.

A global leap forward

Optimum Sorting rapidly advanced its international expansion. Recognizing the importance of the American market from the outset, the company strategically opened a branch in centrally located Denver, Colorado. In 2022, a second location was established in sunny Turlock, California. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, Optimum Sorting extended its reach with a new hub in the vibrant city of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Innovation leads the way

Innovation and growth are the engines behind the daily operations at Optimum Sorting. For this, there is close collaboration with renowned experts, universities and research institutions worldwide. Some groundbreaking innovations that have been introduced to the market of optical sorters in recent years include:

  • 2019: launch of AflaSort, our detection technology with which we can effectively detect traces of harmful aflatoxin.
  • 2022: introduction of Magnus, the all-in-one sorter from Optimum Sorting, ideal for sorting fragile fruit.
  • 2023: roll-out of the TDA technology (Topological Data Analysis), specially developed to sort nuts even better, among other things.
  • 2025: development of UV-LIF (light induced fluorescence) laser sorting, with which lithium can be extracted more efficiently in the mining industry.
