For each object, our laser sorters collect extensive data on color, shape, structure, spectral and biometric attributes. They do this using 6 or 12 wavelengths ranging from UV to SWIR, depending on their configuration for single or double-sided inspection. Based on this information, our systems can differentiate with sub-millimeter spatial resolution.
Until now, our systems could handle three different laser signals at the same time. Using all the information available meant having to work with several separate combinations, which is cumbersome and time-consuming as your operators have to adjust the sorting machine settings for each combination.
Not anymore! Our new advanced laser scanning technology, TDA, analyzes 6 or 12 laser signals simultaneously, creating a detailed ‘profile’ of each object. The advantage is simple: the more information you can combine, the better you can detect and differentiate.
TDA can be installed and retrofitted on our NOVUS and VENTUS sorters. By providing enhanced contrast, it allows even the smallest defects to be detected and efficiently removed while also reducing the removal of good products. TDA has already proven its worth with the sorting of nuts, but it is also applicable for several other food sorting applications, such as potato products, fresh and frozen vegetables, dried fruit, frozen berries, and seafood.
Visualizing a three-dimensional dataset is relatively straightforward, but when it comes to four or more dimensions, it becomes extremely challenging, if not impossible. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is an innovative yet proven approach to data science. It uses techniques from topology, the branch of mathematics that studies shapes. TDA applies these techniques to the analysis of large and high-dimensional data sets, such as those generated by our laser sorters, where conventional statistics may not be effective. TDA
reveals both the big picture and the intricate details. Not only does it provide higher contrast, but by focusing on the ‘shape’ or patterns in the data rather than on individual data points, TDA uncovers new insights and accurately identifies relevant categories, such as foreign objects, mechanical defects, or insect damage. One of the inherent features of TDA is its robustness to noise. By improving the accuracy and efficiency of our laser sorters, this advanced tool will significantly upgrade your sorting process.
